Hubert Ritzenhofen studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1896 to 1907 and was a master student of Claus Meyer. He became known above all for his atmospherically rich cityscapes, landscapes, as well as seascapes and genre scenes. His seascapes in particular rank among the most impressive works in his oeuvre and reflect his close connection to the Dutch coast.
