Goat. c. 1910. Watercolour on handmade paper. 14 x 22 cm. Mounted on a backing board and framed under glass, unopened. - Paper slightly stained and with a vertical crease. Overall, appears to be in very good condition; a magnificent work in vibrant watercolours.
Provenance: Karl Ernst Osthaus Collection, Hagen; Eberhard Osthaus Collection, Worpswede. - Undercut with a depiction of a crocodile. - This work was created during the period when Christian Rohlfs was living with Karl Ernst Osthaus in the early 20th century. During this period, the artist produced numerous drawings and watercolours depicting animals for his patron’s children, some of which have an almost fairy-tale-like quality. The German painter’s Expressionist works were later confiscated during the Nazi era and labelled as ‘degenerate’.
