Portrait of a Lady. 1923. Pencil on brown vellum. 40.5 x 25.5 cm. Signed and dated. Mounted in places on a backing board and beneath a passe-partout. - The sheet is slightly browned due to age and has some light discolouration at the edges; the margins are partly slightly irregular. On the reverse, there are remnants of a previous mounting. Overall in good condition.
This drawing was created during a particularly artistically fruitful phase in Josef Scharl’s career: immediately after his premature departure from the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he had studied under Heinrich von Zügel, he continued his education as a self-taught artist and, within the circle of the New Munich Secession, developed his own visual language, which remains committed to expressive realism whilst contrasting his expressive forms with an ornamental balance.
