Description
Contemporary Art
Bauer/Mlakar (Mmachine)
5060/BUC03/02. 2024. Oil on coated vellum. 59 x 49 cm. Signed on the reverse. Framed under glass. – Overall in very good and clean condition. Fascinating effect of the plotted oil painting.
One of 10 unique copies. - This work reflects the central theme of the Berlin-based duo Martin Bauer and Maj Mlakar, who (formerly known as MMachine) work at the intersection of machine-generated execution and painterly gesture. Using a computer-controlled plotter, oil paints are applied to coated vellum, meaning that the individual artistic signature is not evident in the execution but in the algorithm that generates the painting, whilst not sacrificing the sensory quality of the medium. Thus, this work navigates the tension between conceptual art and gestural painting, drawing on discourses ranging from Minimal Art to contemporary generative art.
