Description
Contemporary Art Bauer/Mlakar (Mmachine) Dots-2401/06. 2024. Acrylic on paper. 50 x 50 cm. Signed and dated on the reverse. Framed under glass. – Only on the right-hand side are there slight, inherent traces of paint. Overall in very good condition and exceptionally beautiful. A vibrant, magnificent work with an exciting colour gradient. One of 10 unique copies. – In this composition by Martin Bauer and Maj Mlakar (formerly Mmachine) from the Dots series, the basic element is the single dot, which is applied to paper in a dense grid of acrylic paint; through thousands of individual applications, it creates a colour gradient ranging from rich navy blue to near-white, evoking associations with Ellsworth Kelly as well as the systematic pictorial logic of Concrete Art. The works are created using a converted industrial laser cutter – one of the largest in Europe – which was originally used to cut sails for tall ships such as the ‘Alexander von Humboldt’. The painterly quality emerges where control ends: in the minimal irregularities of the drawing tools, the subtle deviations that break the machine’s perfection and lend each dot its own individual quality. Acrylic paint and aluminium pigments on firm wove paper. Signed, dated and numbered.
