Description
Contemporary Art
Flad, Wolfgang
Untitled (breath). 2023. Monotype and acrylic on vellum. 44 x 63.5 cm. Signed, dated and titled on the reverse, and bearing the artist’s stamp ‘Flad Wolfgang’. Partially mounted on a backing board and framed under glass. – Overall in very good condition.
In the series ‘breath’, Wolfgang Flad visualises the rhythm of breathing as an artistic principle. Inhalation and exhalation find their formal equivalent in two contrasting halves of the image that meet directly on a single sheet: a side with a calm colour gradient is juxtaposed with an area that bursts into organic bubble and crater shapes in intense blue. The monotype brings with it a sense of immediacy and processual openness that makes the painterly process appear as something breathing and alive, whilst revealing the boundary between media that is characteristic of Flad’s work.
