Contemporary Art Oehlen, Albert Blue. 2020. Lithograph in blue on vellum. 28 x 22.5 cm (50 x 38 cm). Signed and numbered, with a typographic edition label on the reverse. Mounted at points on backing board and framed under glass. In the original edition frame. – The frame glass has a few slight fingerprints on the upper edge, visible only in oblique light; overall in very good condition and exceptionally attractive. An excellent, wonderfully experimental-looking, monochromatic print with margins. One of 100 copies. – Printed by Urs Graf, Druckwerkstatt Speicher, Switzerland. – Published by BLAU International, Berlin. - Albert Oehlen is one of the most prominent and influential figures in contemporary art discourse. He chooses the image itself as the central theme of his work; colours and their application, as well as the artistic gesture per se, become the subject of the image. In the work ‘Blau’, Oehlen revisits his so-called ‘tree’ paintings from the 1980s: leafless, bare trees that dominate the pictorial space and, as a figurative starting point, invite exploration of pure abstraction. Oscillating between clear contours and amorphous sharpness, Oehlen stages a dynamic interplay between abstraction and figuration. The paint – at times applied in rich layers, at others in experimental washes – outlines both the subject of the bare tree and the artist’s gestural, informal style. Presented monochromatically in blue, a nuanced, powerful hue unfolds across the sheet. Lithograph in blue on wove paper. Signed and numbered, with a typographical edition label on the reverse. Spot-mounted to an underlying mat and framed under glass. In edition frame. – Glass with a few slight fingerprints, visible in direct light; overall in very good and impeccably fine condition.
