Their shape is reminiscent of both raindrops and tears, and they thus stand as symbols of emotional processes as well as natural phenomena. The title, with its seemingly positive connotations, combined with the teardrop-like forms, creates a deliberate and compelling ambivalence between euphoria and sadness, hope and melancholy, growth and destruction. As is often the case in Smith’s work, the physical – here in the form of the tear – is not interpreted as an isolated symbol, but as a link between the inner world, nature and the cosmos. The holographic material, which refracts and shifts the light, reinforces this interpretation: every movement of the viewer alters the image and creates a visual metaphor for emotional and sensory complexity.
