Description
Contemporary Art Kneffel, Karin Cherries. 2005. Colour etching on heavy-weight vellum. 59.5 x 59.3 cm (77.7 x 76.3 cm). Signed, dated and numbered. - A very slight crease in the lower left-hand corner and slightly faded; on the reverse, very faint traces of soiling along two edges, and a small, technique-related ink stain; overall in very good condition and exceptionally beautiful. A magnificent, wonderfully nuanced and vibrantly coloured print with a wide margin, featuring the paper’s natural edge on two sides. One of 90 copies. - Published by manus presse, Ostfildern, bearing their blind stamp. - Gerhard Richter’s master student achieved her breakthrough as early as the 1990s with realistic depictions of oversized fruits. Creating a perfect illusion of reality, Kneffel chooses extreme close-ups and an ever-changing interplay of foreground and background for her pictorial spaces. Although the fruit still life has a long-standing tradition in art history – usually opulently draped on tables, fruits symbolise prosperity, luxury and also transience – and though its narrative seems to have been exhausted, Kneffel deliberately places this genre at the centre of her work and gives it a new raison d’être within contemporary art. By concentrating on a small section of the image and transposing it into a larger-than-life format, she achieves a subtle alienation of the object, depicted with impressive photorealistic precision.
