In a deceptively realistic manner, Kneffel shapes her pictorial spaces through extreme cropping and a variable interplay of proximity and distance. Although the fruit still life looks back on a long art-historical tradition and has always functioned as a symbol of prosperity, abundance and transience, Kneffel deliberately takes up this genre, which appears to have been narratively exhausted. By placing it at the centre of her work, she lends it new relevance within contemporary art. Through the monumental enlargement of a highly confined frame and its transposition into an oversized format, she creates a subtle alienation of the object, which is depicted with impressive photorealistic precision.
