Description
Contemporary Art
Liebchen, Sabine
Untitled (Woman seen from behind with a smartphone). 2015. Pencil on vellum. 55.5 x 79.3 cm. Signed and dated. Mounted at points and framed under glass. – A slight crease on the left-hand edge, centre; very isolated, very faint handling marks; overall in very good condition.
Sabine Liebchen’s rear-view depictions of fashion-conscious women immediately captivate the viewer. The figures, engaged in everyday movements against monochrome backgrounds, leave open the role of the ever-changing woman, much like an accompanying narrative. The focus is instead on the virtuoso artistic execution, the dynamic interplay between bodily shadows and fields of light. The result is a series of depictions that suggest an illusionistic reality, characterised by clarity and immediacy. ‘(.) Images whose protagonists, by virtue of their clothing, have a clear connection to the present. On the other hand, the artist takes great care to ensure that her figures remain anonymous.’ (quoted from Klaus Sebastian). Whilst the figure seen from behind has always served as a figure with whom the viewer can identify, Liebchen transforms it into a contemporary visual language of extraordinary appeal.
