The life cycles of lilies – cut flowers whose stages the artist also studied in his private life – are depicted here with delicate precision. Just a few months before the portfolio was created, the German artist produced his first flower drawings. By focusing on the iconographically significant symbolism of the lily and the complementary addition of inscriptions such as ‘dead’, ‘good’ and ‘silly flower’, Schütte combines a vanitas motif with self-deprecating lightness.
