Contemporary Art
Pusenkoff, George
Who is afraid of the Screen #2. 2003. Acrylic on canvas. 70 x 70 cm. Signed and titled on the reverse, with details of the work and the work number. - A few small, barely noticeable scuffs. Overall, very good condition.
The title of this work references Barnett Newman’s series of paintings ‘Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue’ and transposes it into the digital age through its reference to the computer screen. By imitating the screen’s surface, Pusenkoff creates a sense of disorientation in the shift from an interactive to a static surface, thereby generating a tension between digital appearance and painterly materiality, which forms the conceptual core of his work: Pusenkoff examines the conditions of image creation and perception in the computer age, whilst at the same time drawing on 20th-century art history as a frame of reference. “Who is Afraid of the Screen” is one of his key series of works.
