Description
Contemporary Art
Baumgärtel, Thomas
Banana. 2016. Lacquer and stencil spray on wood, stand with插槽 made of lacquered wood. 96 x 44 x 3 cm. Signed. - An exceptionally clean and very fine example.
Baumgärtel 1894. – One of 33 copies. - Since 1986, Thomas Baumgärtel has been marking the entrances to art museums and galleries with a banana sprayed using the pochoir technique, thereby not only establishing a distinctive mark of quality but also serving as a signpost to art venues. As a reference to Warhol’s banana cover for *The Velvet Underground & Nico* from 1967, he transfers the iconic motif from the studio into public space, thereby reversing the direction of movement in Pop Art: what Warhol brought from the street into the picture, Baumgärtel takes back out onto the street. This three-dimensional edition takes this idea a step further: the freestanding wooden sculpture detaches the symbol from the wall and lends the ephemeral spray gesture a lasting physical presence.
