Street Art – Comics
Crumb, Robert
(Self-portrait. For Gérard Dole.) Original drawing. Black fibre-tip pen on offset paper. 7.5 x 12.5 cm. Signed. In: Robert Crumb. De l’underground à la Genèse. Exhibition catalogue, Musée d’art Moderne de la ville de Paris, 2012. – In good condition with clear, sharp contours.
Original drawing for the musician and singer Gérard Dole. With a dedication. - Robert Crumb’s artistic oeuvre is regarded as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic in the history of comics. It combines an obsessive psychological self-examination with a ruthlessly critical observation of Western society and its neuroses. He has created covers and portraits for artists such as Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, the Grateful Dead, Artie Shaw, Bo Carter and Blind Boy Fuller. His best-known work is the cover of *Cheap Thrills* (1968) by Big Brother and the Holding Company, featuring Janis Joplin. Crumb’s works are characterised by a retro aesthetic, satirical humour and intricate linework. He often uses nostalgic typography, emphasises physicality and social types, thereby combining visual elements of the early 20th century with irony and subcultural wit. His works are now exhibited in museums (including MoMA, New York) and are regarded as prime examples of the fusion of comic and music history.
