Description
Conceptual Art Barry, Robert Untitled (Dark Red, Cross). 1994. Acrylic and ink on canvas. 61 x 61 cm. Monogrammed and dated in the corners on the reverse, and bearing typographically inscribed labels with details of the work and information on provenance. - Overall in very good and immaculate condition. Holly Solomon Gallery, New York/Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia. - Robert Barry is one of the pioneers of Conceptual Art and, alongside Lawrence Weiner, Joseph Kosuth and Douglas Huebler, ranks among the defining figures of a movement that consistently detached the artwork from the material object. In addition to working with invisible media such as inert gases, radio waves and language, Barry has, since the 1980s, been creating monochromatic, square canvases on which, as in the present work, words are applied in a strictly logical arrangement using ink of almost identical colour: REGRET, OPPOSITE, LIFE, AVOIDING, INEVITABLE, ROUTINE, INTEND. It is only when the viewer moves around the work that the text is revealed; questions of invisibility and of time and space as conditions of perception remain ever-present, oscillating between reflection and commentary. The square format and the cross-like arrangement in the work’s title also refer to Barry’s exploration of geometric structure as a conceptual framework. Acrylic and ink on canvas.
