Schellmann 1988.03. – One of 75 copies. – Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York. - This work by Hanne Darboven brings together the two central strands of her oeuvre: the serial structure and writing as a measure of time. Six identical postcard images of a Hamburg suburb are arranged in a regular grid, suggesting a temporal sequence even though the image itself remains unchanged. Time is made visible not by the motif, but by the handwritten entries. The superimposed texts, dated from 12 to 17 June 1988, combine everyday observations with Darboven’s characteristic method of date addition: by systematically calculating numerical values from dates, she made time both calculable and, at the same time, intangible. The crossed-out word ‘today’ encapsulates the central paradox of her work, for the present moment has already passed the instant it is fixed. – The work is part of the collection of MoMA, New York.
