Description
Conceptual Art
Enneper, Mic
Eismeer. 1994. Wall-mounted object made of paraffin, wood and graphite. 26 x 21 x 4 cm. Signed and dated on the reverse. – A few very small, barely visible scuffs on the edges. Overall in exceptionally good condition.
Private collection, Düsseldorf. – This work forms part of a series that Mic Enneper produced in several variations, always using wood and paraffin wax. The conceptual starting point is Caspar David Friedrich’s famous painting *The Ice Sea*: Enneper translates the fractured ice surfaces of the original – piled high by the elemental forces of nature – into a relief-like layering of wood and graphite, which he coats with a milky, translucent layer of paraffin wax. This preserves and fixes the motif, whilst at the same time stripping it of any painterly warmth and enveloping it in a cool, timeless rigidity that corresponds to the subject of the original in its own way.
