Conceptual Art
Froese, Dieter
2 documentary drawings relating to video performances: *The Airing of the Pyramid I (Circle)* and *Stone Food Race*. Both 1972. 76 x 57 cm and 57 x 76 cm respectively. Pencil and collaged silkscreen print on plotted tracing paper and screened vellum respectively. Each signed, dated, titled and labelled. – Some with isolated small stains; one sheet has aged to a brownish colour, more pronounced at the edges. Outer edges partly slightly bumped. Overall in good condition.
From the artist’s estate. - See also the film stills: Lomholt Mail Art Archive, Agora Studios, Maastricht 1979, Gallery Programme 9 October 1979. - These two sheets form part of Dieter Froese’s body of work comprising conceptual drawings and video performances, which he produced from 1971 onwards in New York and Hartford. *The Airing of the Pyramid I (Circle)* documents a performance held in New York in April 1972, featuring two performers and two Sony video cameras. A circular diagram shows the spatial arrangement of the camera positions in relation to the cardinal directions. *Stone Foot Race* documents a kinetic performance based on chance and the laws of physics, featuring a sliding stone, which the artist has recorded in precise pencil drawings and notes. Both works were created during Froese’s most productive early period and are closely linked to the New York alternative art network of the early 1970s, from which institutions such as P.S.1 later emerged.
