Description
Conceptual Art
Kosuth, Joseph
Mondrian’s Work XIII. 2023. Digital UV pigment print on Hahnemühle Velin. 56 x 56 cm. Signed and numbered on the reverse on a label, and bearing the publisher’s stamp. - Overall, very good condition. A magnificent, finely detailed print of the linear, borderless composition; the colours are rich and vibrant.
One of 15 copies. - Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York. - In *Mondrian’s Work XIII*, Kosuth’s conceptual approach is particularly striking: the colour fields of Mondrian’s composition are entirely filled with quotations from his writings on colour, form and the disappearance of the material in favour of pure areas of colour. The geometric pictorial space becomes a medium for text whilst remaining an image. Kosuth thus lays bare Mondrian’s theoretical foundation for his abstract painting and productively reverses this relationship, so that it is not the image that illustrates the text, but the text that merges into the image.
