Conceptual Art
Kosuth, Joseph
3 works. L'essence de la rhétorique est dans l'allegorie IV. 1998. From: Sequences. One aquatint and one heliogravure on Rives Velin. Both sheets signed and numbered on the reverse, bearing the publisher’s stamp and a stamp indicating installation instructions. – Overall in very good condition. Magnificent, exceptionally richly coloured prints without margins.
One of 60 copies each. - Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York. - Joseph Kosuth, one of the founders of international conceptual art, has, since the 1960s, established the relationship between language, meaning and image as a central theme of his work. This three-part edition references the organic cloud forms from René Magritte’s painting *L’apparition* (1928) and labels them with pairs of terms from Michel Foucault’s essay *Ceci n’est pas une pipe* (1973): imiter et signifier – montrer et nommer – regarder et lire. In doing so, Kosuth explores how words generate meaning and how the relationship between linguistic and pictorial representation is fundamentally unstable.
