Ars publicata 1998.01 1–3. - One of 60 copies each. - Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York. - The ‘Duchamp Triptych’ takes up three iconic works by Duchamp which fundamentally redefined the relationship between authorship, the original and reproduction in the 20th century. Sturtevant’s practice of strategic repetition, developed since the early 1960s, is not aimed at copying or paying homage, but at exposing the mechanisms through which meaning and the character of a work are generated in art history. By bringing Duchamp’s provocations back into the picture, Sturtevant visualises not Duchamp’s work itself, but the system that turned him into a phenomenon.
