Description
Conceptual Art
Welling, James
2 works. Two Works by Sherrie Levine. From: Sequences. 1998. Each a colour lithograph on Fabriano Velin paper. Each 34.5 x 28 (50 x 40 cm). Each signed and numbered on the reverse, and bearing the publisher’s stamp. - Overall in very good condition. Magnificent, nuanced prints with deep black tones in places, featuring a velvety effect to the colour.
One of 60 copies each. – Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York. – The two photographs that Welling took of Sherrie Levine’s glass sculptures *Black and White Bottles* (1992) intertwine two artistic strategies of appropriation: Levine, for her part, had already referenced existing forms, and Welling’s photographic translation of her objects into the medium of print adds a further layer of reflection on authorship, representation and the original, and conceptually embeds these with precision within the discourse on Appropriation Art that both artists have helped shape since the 1980s.
