Private collection, Düsseldorf. – The ‘Generation’ series marks a decisive turning point in Maurice Cockrill’s oeuvre: the transition from expressive figuration to abstraction in the mid-1990s. In this work, the impasto, gestural painting in nuanced earth tones and vibrant orange makes the physical energy of the painting process immediately visible and testifies to a visual language that is increasingly breaking away from the representational, without losing its sensual immediacy.
