Description
Abstract Expressionism American Modernism Francis, Sam Trietto 1. 1991. Colour aquatint on heavy-weight vellum. 97.5 x 120 cm (134.5 x 166.2 cm). Signed and numbered. - Slightly dusty; very few, slight handling and crease marks on the outer margins; very isolated, slight creases caused by pressure; slight superficial rubbing on the outer edges in a few places; on the reverse, lower left in the outer margin, a few very faint and barely visible fingerprints; narrow mounting strips along the edges and in the centre of the sheet, a small tear in the right-hand margin (approx. 1.2 cm); overall in very good condition and exceptionally beautiful. A magnificent print, with wonderfully fresh colours and multiple layers, featuring an extremely expressive composition in an exceptionally large sheet format, with a clearly defined plate edge and a wide margin. SFE-074 RC. – One of 66 copies. - Printed by Valter & Eleonora Rossi, Vigna Antoniniana Stamperia d’Arte, Rome. - Published by 2RC Edizioni d’Arte, ibid. - With the embossed stamp of the printer and publisher. - Sam Francis’s magnificent work pulsates with its interplay of colours and its powerful, expressive formal language. The kaleidoscope of colours—turquoise-green, fiery red, sunny yellow, deep blue and ocean blue—is luminous and opens up a fascinating visual world full of gestural abstraction. The amorphous subject, positioned at the centre, appears to float, embedded within the expressive patches of colour, splashes and luminous fields, evoking associations with water, the sea and its depths. From the 1960s onwards, Francis developed a highly personal form of spontaneous and gestural dripping, directing the paint across the canvas in circling and splashing movements. As a proponent of a lyrically oriented form of Abstract Expressionism, his interest lies in the poetry of colour combinations. “Colour is a pattern that emerges on the membrane of the mind.” (Sam Francis, in: Künstler. Kritisches Lexikon der Gegenwartskunst, Munich 1994, p. 2). Colour aquatint on wove paper. Signed and numbered. – Barely dusted; very few, slight handling and crease marks in the outer margins; very isolated, slight pinch pleat due to the technique; slightly superficially rubbed in a few spots along the outer edges, on the reverse a few very faint and barely visible fingerprints in the lower left outer margin, small traces of mounting in the edges and centre, a small marginal tear on the right (approx. 1.2 cm), all in all in very good and impeccably fine condition. A splendid, wonderfully vivid and multi-layered print of this extremely expressive composition in large format, with a clearly defined plate mark and wide margins. – One of 66 copies. – Printed by Valter & Eleonora Rossi, Vigna Antoniniana Stamperia d’Arte, Rome. - Published by 2RC Edizioni d’Arte, ibid. - With printer’s and publisher’s drystamp. - Sam Francis’s monumental work pulsates with its interplay of colours and its powerful, expressive formal language. The kaleidoscope of colours – turquoise green, fiery red, sunny yellow, deep blue and ocean blue – is radiant, opening up a fascinating visual world full of gestural abstraction.
