Trietto 3. 1991. Colour aquatint on vellum. 68.5 x 98.5 cm (96.7 cm x 135.1 cm). Signed and inscribed ‘A.(rtist) P.(roof)’. - Slightly dusty; very isolated, very slight handling or crease marks on the edge or in a corner; very slight superficial rubbing in one spot at the bottom centre right; on the reverse, a very isolated tiny brown spot; paper slightly rubbed in places along the outer edges, likely due to handling. Mounting: overall in very good condition and exceptionally attractive. A magnificent, wonderfully high-contrast and finely nuanced, multi-layered print of the large-format sheet, with a clearly defined plate edge and a wide margin.
SFE-076 RC. – One of 14 artist’s proofs prior to the print run. – Printed by Valter & Eleonora Rossi, Vigna Antoniniana Stamperia d’Arte, Rome. - Published by 2RC Edizioni d’Arte, ibid. - Bearing the embossed stamp of the printer and publisher. - In 1970, Sam Francis opened his own print workshop, the Litho Shop, in Santa Monica, California. Together with his staff, he succeeded in capturing in his graphic works the same lightness and immediacy already evident in his paintings. Driven by a spirit of experimentation and untamed creativity, he produced, amongst other things, magnificent aquatints such as ‘Trietto 3’. The work’s colour tones – such as wine red, emerald green, sky blue and sun yellow – evolve into harmoniously balanced, atmospherically dynamic surfaces. Accompanied by expressive, vigorous splashes and splotches, they form a composition brimming with vibrant dynamism. Full of energy and vitality, the colour forms and areas interact with one another, revealing the artist’s distinctive style.
