Description
Abstract Expressionism Motherwell, Robert Untitled. From: Flight. 1970/1971. Colour silkscreen print on sturdy, textured vellum. 55 x 43 cm (65 x 50 cm). Signed and numbered. – Very sporadic, faint, dotted smudges on the left margin. Slight ink bleed through on the reverse. Overall, very good condition. An excellent, richly coloured and grainy-looking print of the abstract composition with margins. One of 250 copies. – From the famous ‘Flight’ portfolio, to which, alongside Motherwell, James Rosenquist, Claes Oldenburg and Jasper Johns also contributed, and which was produced in aid of the humanitarian work of the IRC. – Published by the International Rescue Committee, New York. - Printed at Maurel Studios, New York. - The tension between free gesture and compositional rigour characterises Motherwell’s central artistic vocabulary; in this work, too, he uses a generously sweeping form to lend an almost meditative harmony of colour with a distinctive, almost tranquil effect. - One copy of the edition is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
