Description
American Modernism Minimalism Flavin, Dan 3 works. Untitled (Triptych). From: Sequences. 1996–98. Each an aquatint on handmade Twinrocker Velin paper. Each 50 x 40 cm. Each signed, dated and numbered on the reverse, and bearing the publisher’s stamp. - Each with faint traces of colour on the reverse. Overall in very good and clean condition. Magnificent, exceptionally rich in colour and intensely luminous prints of the monochrome, almost full-format compositions with strikingly defined paper edges, each with the paper edge on the left in white. One of 60 copies each. - Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York. - These three aquatints are among the rare print works by Dan Flavin, who is best known for his installations using industrial fluorescent tubes. Having worked almost exclusively with coloured artificial light since 1961, which he combined to create atmospheric spatial installations, Flavin here transfers his fundamental principle of colour and light effects to the medium of printmaking: Green, blue and pink appear as monochrome colour fields of extraordinary luminosity that almost fill the entire format, and which can be interpreted as a colouristic distillation of his installations. At the same time, the prints effortlessly stand on their own as independent compositions and succinctly demonstrate how consistently Flavin pursued the question of the translatability of light and colour across media.
