LeWitt, Sol
3 works. *Colours Superimposed*, in: *Sol LeWitt, Books*, 1966–1990. 1990. Colour etching in burgundy, forest green and orange on Velin paper. Each 19.7 x 19.7 cm (24.8 x 24.8 cm). Each signed and numbered. Loose in original half-linen folder. - One sheet has two slight surface scuffs within the image; all sheets have isolated, very superficial soot marks on the margins and very faint discolouration in the corners from the accompanying cardboard divider; the folder has a small stain on the outside, whilst the inside cover pages show very superficial scuffing in places; overall in very good condition and exceptionally beautiful. Consistently magnificent prints, rich in colour and with wonderfully nuanced textures, featuring clearly embossed plate edges and margins.
Krakow, December 1990. – One of 20 copies. - Printed by Joseph Montague and Eric Ziemann, Watanabe Studio Ltd., New York. - Published by Portikus, Frankfurt. - Published as a special edition to accompany the catalogue raisonné of LeWitt’s books 1966–1990. - Like few others, LeWitt had a decisive influence on Minimal Art and Conceptual Art, giving the movement its name with his *Paragraphs on Conceptual Art*. His work epitomises the manifestation of the artistic idea; this idea takes precedence over physical execution and is the fundamental driving force behind the creation of art. Drawing on a strictly geometrically reduced vocabulary of forms and lines, he creates works of the utmost impact through varied repetition and apparent serial infinity. These colour etchings demonstrate an exploration of geometric variation in colour. Despite their formal and chromatic rigour and reduction to the essentials, they unfold maximum expressive power in their artistic composition and make a visual tangibility tangible.
