The victory marked the beginning of American independence. For this work, Schnabel used the ‘American Revolution Wallpaper’ – which hung in the White House until 1999 – as his source material. Through colour alterations, he creates contrasts with the charged scene, frames the heroism with light purple accents, and also adds another layer by imitating tears and alluding to the wallpaper, which was taken down after 1999 and hung in another location.
