No longer available from Foster. – One of 300 copies. – Published by the artist’s own press, ‘Untitled Press’, Captiva Island, Florida (dry stamp in the lower left-hand corner, stamp in black on the reverse). - “The Tramp” was created during a creative phase in the early 1970s, when Rauschenberg experimented with printmaking techniques, combined them, and brought together various media and elements on the picture surface in a collage-like manner, thereby allowing content and technique to intertwine. In “The Tramp”, a photograph, an embossed image and translucent layers of paper, masterfully executed using the aquatint technique, merge to form a multi-layered material composition. The arrangement appears almost three-dimensional, yet remains true to the two-dimensional nature of the medium. In this way, Rauschenberg reflects on the tension between tactile presence and pictorial illusion, thereby further developing the idea of the “Combine Paintings”. Different materials and media combine to form a unit that can be experienced through touch, whilst at the same time highlighting the permeability between art and the everyday world.
