Description
Pop Art Opie, Julian Ian. 2016. Coloured lacquer on aluminium. Approx. 38 x 17.7 x 4.8 cm. Signed and numbered on both feet at the base. – Very slight dusting in places; overall in very good condition. A magnificent, high-contrast work with a powerful presence. One of 30 copies. - From the ‘Walking Statuettes’ series. - With his distinctive, stylised work, Opie has developed an iconic, universally recognised visual language that has established a firm position within contemporary discourse. Since the beginning of his artistic career, he has been exploring the expansion of artistic media, probing the boundaries between painting and sculpture whilst incorporating the latest production techniques. Drawing on popular culture for their motifs, his figurative representations are firmly rooted in the tradition of pictorial history and focus on portraits and half- and full-length figures. Organised into highly varied series, his works take on a playful character. Central to his work is always the exploration of movement, through which temporality is embodied in the human form. Opie chooses a visual vocabulary in which individual features are reduced to a few strokes or to the schematisation of basic physiognomic traits, resulting in pictogram-like portraits of universal validity.
