Pop Art
Opie, Julian
This is Shahnoza/Shahnoza Pole Dancer. 2008. Colour silkscreen print on vinyl film, mounted on a stretcher frame. 256 x 120 cm. – A few small, barely visible scuffs. Overall in very good and clean condition. A magnificent, sharply defined print.
Published by Alan Cristea Gallery, London. - This vinyl film mounted on a stretcher frame forms part of Julian Opie’s ‘This Is Shahnoza’ series, a body of work created from 2005 onwards, for which the professional dancer Shahnoza modelled in a series of choreographed poses. Opie, who analysed over 2,000 photographs as the basis for the work, translated the documentary material into his unmistakable visual language: black contour lines, flat colouration, a neutral background. The human figure is reduced to its essentials without losing any of its expressiveness. The choice of vinyl film as the medium is more than a technical decision; it alludes to commercial imagery, advertising graphics and the urban environment. With the figure of the pole dancer, the body of work also ventures into art-historically charged territory: Opie takes up the time-honoured motif of the female nude and, through his choice of subject, his reduced formal language and the serial nature of the works, reinterprets it in a contemporary manner.
