Description
Pop Art
Wesselmann, Tom
Foot (1972 Munich Olympic Games). 1970. Colour screen print on Velin card. 86 x 64 cm (97 x 70 cm). Signed, dated and numbered. With the typographic lettering. – Edges with very few small, barely noticeable scuffs. Overall in very good condition. A magnificent and richly coloured print.
One of 200 copies. – Published by Edition Olympia 1972 GmbH. - Printed by Kroll-Siebdruck. - In the run-up to the 1972 Olympic Games, the Organising Committee of the XX Olympiad commissioned internationally renowned artists, including David Hockney, Peter Phillips and Horst Antes, to design a series of posters intended to combine sport and art. Wesselmann chose a motif typical of his work from the early 1970s: a single, larger-than-life naked foot set against a rich green background, printed in flat fields of colour. The print makes a direct reference to his ‘Great American Nude’ series and his increasing focus on isolated bodily details on a monumental scale.
