Description
Pop Art Fashion Ramos, Mel Gianni. 1999. Offset lithograph on heavy-weight vellum. 71 x 50.5 cm (100 x 77 cm). Signed and dated. Mounted in places. - Slight handling marks in places; on the reverse, a label in another person’s handwriting and isolated faint scuffs. Overall in very good condition. Excellent print, with nuanced and fresh colours. In this unique print, Mel Ramos draws on the format of the dress-up doll, a children’s toy popular since the 18th century that presents the female body as an interchangeable canvas for clothes and roles. The nude female figure stands frontally and motionless in the centre, surrounded by five historicising garments with characteristic clip-on tabs. What begins as a harmless childhood memory is revealed to be a precise analysis: the female body serves as an object for wearing, trying on and presenting garments, illustrating a structure that the advertising and fashion industries continue to reproduce to this day.
