Description
Pop Art Ramos, Mel 20 colour offset lithographs. In: *Superman at the Supermarket. The Mel Ramos Pin-Up Product Paintings Picture Book*. 2015. Sheet size: 50 x 32 cm each. In a screw-bound linen folder. Signed and numbered in the colophon. – In very good condition overall. One of 99 copies. – Publication accompanying the exhibition “Superman im Supermarkt | Superman at the Supermarket”, Gallery Levy, Hamburg. - Published by the gallery. - To mark the artist’s 80th birthday. - In this portfolio by Mel Ramos, he condenses the themes that characterise his oeuvre into a single composition. The publication appeared in the context of the installation of the same name at Gallery Levy in Hamburg, for which an entire supermarket was constructed, its goods all drawn from Ramos’s visual world. The portfolio translates this concept into print: the boundaries between artist’s book, catalogue raisonné and product catalogue are deliberately left open. Ramos, who has for decades employed the interweaving of the female body, branded products and advertising aesthetics as an artistic practice, finds here a form that renders his oeuvre itself legible as a supermarket range – and once again leaves the question of what distinguishes art from merchandise productively unanswered. 20 colour offset lithographs.
