Modern Photography
Rosefeldt, Julian
Manifesto (Special Edition 1). 2016. Photograph on Fujicolour paper, in a typographically labelled passe-partout. 57.5 x 46 cm (75 x 55 cm). Signed and numbered on the reverse. - Overall in very good condition, clean print.
One of 20 copies. - Julian Rosefeldt’s project ‘Manifesto’ arose from an intensive engagement with feminist positions and historical artists’ manifestos. Drawing on over 50 sources, Rosefeldt developed twelve collaged texts that can be read as a polyphonic ‘Manifesto of Manifestos’. In a deliberate subversion of the male-dominated history of manifesto-writing, he had all the texts spoken by the actress Cate Blanchett. This photograph shows Blanchett (in the original film context as Mierle Laderman Ukeles) alongside the quote by Kazimir Malevich: “Art requires truth, not sincerity.” This association illustrates Rosefeldt’s central concern: that artistic truth does not lie in individual sensibilities, but in the explicit claim to understand art as an expression of social responsibility and intellectual independence.
