Description
Modern Photography
Bhimji, Zarina
Murmur. 2002. Colour transparency in a lightbox. 90 x 55 x 10 cm. Signed and numbered on the reverse on a label. Comes with mounting fittings and power cable. - In very good overall condition. Excellent, high-contrast prints with a captivating sense of depth.
One of 20 copies. - Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York, on the occasion of documenta 11, Kassel 2002. - Zarina Bhimji was born in Uganda to Indian parents and was forced to leave the country following the expulsion of all South Asians by Idi Amin in 1972. For her work for documenta 11, she returned to Uganda for the first time and photographed architecture, airports, cemeteries, barracks, police cells and prisons from the era of the Amin regime. By translating the photographs into the medium of the lightbox, the depicted locations take on an intense, painterly and three-dimensional quality; they appear both real and imaginary at the same time, and come together as fragments to form a labyrinth of displacement.
