Griffelkunst 376 376 B1–B6. - Published by the Griffelkunst Association, Hamburg, 2019. Complete series. In this edition, Jonothan Monk combines the clear formal language of Modernism with a contemporary reflection on perception and repetition. Taking Wilhelm Wagenfeld’s iconic design as his starting point, Monk gently transforms the object by incorporating the fleeting light of a sunset into his design. The gentle colour gradients do not appear merely decorative, but rather evoke the passage of time and shifting moods. Thus, the supposed objectivity of the design is expanded to include a poetic dimension. Monk navigates the space between homage and an independent artistic gesture by recontextualising the familiar. The result is a work that appears both familiar and transformed, raising questions about the original and its variations. ‘Wagenfeld Sunsets’ thus becomes a quiet exploration of light, memory and the enduring impact of modern design.
