Description
Modern Photography
Demand, Thomas
5 works. In: Five Drafts (Simulator). 2004. Each a digital pigment print on handmade photo paper. Each 24 x 24 cm (38.5 x 38 cm). One sheet from the series is signed and numbered. With accompanying title page featuring typographic work titles and details of the publisher. - Overall in very good condition. Magnificent, high-contrast prints with wide margins; the colour has a velvety, grainy effect.
Lange p. 344. – One of 60 copies. – Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York, for the Kunsthaus Bregenz. - The five sheets depict a cardboard model of Demand’s large-format work *Space Simulator* from 2003, which takes a NASA space flight simulator from the 1960s as its subject. The edition thus documents not the finished work, but its creative process and the sketches involved. This encapsulates Demand’s core artistic principle: he constructs three-dimensional models from paper and cardboard based on real-life models, photographs them, and then destroys the model. All that remains is the image. The ‘Five Drafts’ take this logic a step further back and make the maquette itself the subject: the model becomes a model that, in turn, simulates a historical original. This creates a chain of representation and reality broken at multiple points, bringing questions of authenticity, representation and construction to the fore.
