Description
Modern Photography
Graham, Dan
Family at Antwerp Zoo. 2003. C-print on photographic paper, mounted on card. 46 x 30 cm (69 x 50 cm). Signed and numbered on the reverse on a label. - Overall very good condition. An excellent, high-contrast and grainy print.
One of 30 copies. - Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York, to mark the 50th Venice Biennale (2003). - This work builds on Graham’s long-standing exploration of human behaviour in public and semi-public spaces, a theme that has run through his photographic, sculptural and theoretical work since the 1960s. Viewer and subject imperceptibly swap roles: the family observes the animals, whilst the viewer of the image observes the family. This quiet reflection on the gaze, control and social normalisation is characteristic of Graham’s conceptual approach.
