Koenig, John Franklin
Untitled, 1960. Mixed media with watercolour on Japanese paper. 27 x 24 cm. Signed, dated and inscribed on the reverse, with a dedication for the year 1961. Mounted on a backing board and framed under glass, unopened. – Overall, appears to be in very good condition.
After the end of the Second World War, Koenig attended art classes at the G.I. University in Biarritz, France, where he produced his first paintings. His interest in Asian art, which this exponent of Abstract Expressionism developed at an early stage, deepened during a visit to Japan in 1960. It was during this period that the present work was created, the style of which the American artist refers to as ‘Koen (Garden)’.
