American Modernism
Middleton, Sam
Blues for two. 1963. Colour lithograph on vellum. 37.6 x 29.3 cm (53.3 x 39.6 cm). Signed, dated, titled and numbered. Mounted in places on the reverse of the passe-partout. - Barely visible yellowing in the far right-hand margin; very isolated, pale spots in the left-hand and lower margins; a pale trace of colour in the upper left-hand outer margin; very few, very slight handling marks in the upper and lower margins; a very slight horizontal crease on the top edge; faint traces of paint/ink in the centre of the reverse; two small pinholes; overall in very good condition and exceptionally beautiful. A magnificent, colour-rich, high-contrast and experimental-looking print with a wide margin.
One of 85 copies. - Sam Middleton is an African-American artist from Harlem whose work shows influences of Abstract Expressionism. Colour, brushwork and composition are characterised by the spontaneous, controlled randomness of the celebrated American post-war movement. Another of Middleton’s key sources of inspiration is music, both jazz and classical. Even as a child, he frequently visited the nearby Savoy Ballroom. Music goes hand in hand with his artistic practice; the dynamic, harmonious composition of this print makes the colours resonate. In the USA, Middleton struggled to achieve his artistic breakthrough and subsequently travelled to Mexico, Spain, Sweden, France and Denmark before settling in the Netherlands in 1961. His work forms part of the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum in New York; in 1962, the museum featured him in the exhibition ‘40 Artists under 40’.
