Rockport. 1920s. Charcoal on BFK Rives-Velin (with watermark). 23.5 x 37.5 cm (28.5 x 40 cm). Signed. Partially mounted on a backing board and set free within the passe-partout. – Paper slightly browned, with slight scuffs and tears to the edges and corners; paper shows slight handling marks and staining. Overall in good condition.
Abraham Walkowitz belongs to the first generation of American modernists. The Russian-American artist immigrated to the USA from Siberia at an early age and studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City and the Académie Julian in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens. In the mid-1920s, Walkowitz produced a large number of landscape drawings and cityscapes, including this work.
