Description
Modern and Contemporary Art
Belgian Modernism
Van Velde, Bram
Untitled. Colour lithograph on Japanese paper. 28 x 37 cm (30.7 x 46.2 cm). Signed and numbered. Minimal brown spots. A magnificent, vibrant print that almost fills the sheet.
One of 100 copies. Stylistically, Van Velde was closely associated with Tachism and Lyrical Abstraction – the European counterpart to American Abstract Expressionism. His compositions are characterised by recognisable, partly geometric forms, which are set in tension with one another through transparent layers of paint, always in search of a balance between the colour fields. The monumental arch-shaped form in ochre, dark brown and grey-green is exemplary of van Velde’s lyrical-abstract style of the 1960s and 1970s, in which gestural brushstrokes and transparent layers of paint reveal existential tensions – protection and threat, interior and exterior. As a close friend of Samuel Beckett and a participant in documenta 1964, van Velde is regarded as one of the most significant representatives of the European Informel movement, whose works are now on display in international museums such as the Tate Gallery in London.
