Description
Modern and Contemporary Art
German Post-War Modernism
Beck, Gerlinde
Design for a steel sculpture. 1971. Mixed media on vellum. 61 x 86 cm. Signed and dated; on the reverse, a handwritten, typographic sales label from the Kunstverein Stuttgart. – The sheet has small, faint stains and isolated creases; the corners and edges are slightly rubbed; the reverse shows subtle studio marks. Overall, very good condition. An expressive work.
Gerlinde Beck’s drawing was created in 1970 as part of the ‘Physiognomics’ series, a group of monumental metal sculptures whose appearance is reminiscent of robots. The artist transfers these sculptures onto flat paper whilst retaining their three-dimensionality through the metallic-looking surface, the light-and-shadow contrasts and the reflections of light. The central theme of the problem of balance and the interplay between two- and three-dimensional thinking is made particularly clear in this drawing through the framing of the image and the arrangement of the sculptural joints within it.
