Description
Modern and Contemporary Art
German Post-War Modernism
Berke, Hubert
Abstract Composition. 1951. Watercolour on Hahnemühle handmade paper (with watermark). 48 x 62 cm. Signed and dated. - Margins with very subtle tears; verso shows studio marks, with slight stains and traces of former mounting. Overall in good condition. With the handmade edge on all sides.
Stamped on the reverse by the estate. - This work was created in the year Berke became a member of the ‘ZEN’ artists’ group. Informal works characterise large parts of his oeuvre. As Berke put it in 1953: ‘You want to know why I want to paint abstractly. The civilised world is worn out and bleak on the surface; generally, there is a rigid, mask-like quality; the world of the outward human being lacks humanity. So we must give form to the forces that operate behind the outward appearances of things.”
