Modern and Contemporary Art German Post-War Modernism Berke, Hubert Abstract Composition. 1951. Watercolour on Hahnemühle handmade paper (with watermark). 48 x 62 cm. Signed and dated. - Margins with very subtle tears; verso shows studio marks, with slight stains and traces of former mounting. Overall in good condition. With the handmade edge on all sides. Stamped on the reverse by the estate. - This work was created in the year Berke became a member of the ‘ZEN’ artists’ group. Informal works characterise large parts of his oeuvre. As Berke put it in 1953: ‘You want to know why I want to paint abstractly. The civilised world is worn out and bleak on the surface; generally, there is a rigid, mask-like quality; the world of the outward human being lacks humanity. So we must give form to the forces that operate behind the outward appearances of things.” Watercolour on Hahnemühle handmade paper (with watermark). Signed and dated. – Margins with very slight tears; reverse side shows traces of studio use, light stains and marks from previous mounting. Overall in good condition. With deckle edge on all sides. - On the reverse, an estate stamp. - This work was created in the year Berke became a member of the artists’ group ‘ZEN’.
