German Post-War Modernism
Dahmen, Karl Fred
4 works. 1963. Each an etching and aquatint on BFK Rives-Velin (with watermark). Sheet size up to 52.5 x 36.5 cm. Each signed and dated; 2 sheets Roman numerally numbered; 2 marked ‘Probedruck’. – Some very slight rubbing and small stains; slightly discoloured at the edges and with brown spots; reverse showing traces of former mounting. Overall in good condition. Excellent, experimental-looking and wonderfully burred prints, each with a clearly embossed plate edge and wide margin, some with the scoop mark.
Angst 34, 36, 37, 38. – 4 sheets from the 8-part suite ‘Ibiza’. – Each a proof or a Roman-numbered copy preceding the edition of 25 copies known to Angst. - Printed by Lundgren, Ibiza, published by Edition Rothe, Heidelberg. - In the etchings by Karl Fred Dahmen in our collection, the influence of the artist’s extended stay on Ibiza in 1963 is evident. The island’s natural landscape elements – such as earth, light and sand – are powerfully rendered on the zinc plate, manifesting themselves in intense etching processes and a relief-like texture in the etchings. The Ibiza Suite is regarded as the most important edition of Dahmen’s early print work. - Included: A signed, dated and numbered etching by Fritz Wotruba, Three Figures, 1961.
