German Post-War Modernism
Dietz, Madeleine
Untitled, 1994. Steel, earth. 28 x 27 x 6 cm. Labels with details of the work on the reverse. - The soil is slightly crumbly in places at the top left-hand corner. Overall, very good condition.
This solid, square-shaped steel casing serves as a container and display for dried, deeply furrowed earth, which has been a central material in Madeleine Dietz’s work since a trip to Africa. The interplay between steel and earth gives rise to contrasting effects: fragile and indestructible, brittle and smooth, natural and man-made. The deeply fissured surface appears simultaneously as a landscape and as a symbol; the steel frame holds together that which is subject to decay.
