Description
Modern and Contemporary Art
German Post-War Modernism
Flemming, Alex
Berlin/32. 1993. Mixed media and silkscreen on canvas. 70 x 70 cm. Signed, dated and titled on the reverse. - Some minor scuffs in places. Overall, very good condition.
Alex Flemming, an artist born in São Paulo and based in Berlin since 1992, has developed a conceptually grounded visual practice that focuses on questions of identity, longing and cultural memory. This work combines two layers: the devotional pictorial tradition collides with the text of a personal ad. In this way, Flemming superimposes the timeless desire of the Old Master pictorial tradition upon the banal quest for love characteristic of the modern era, thereby reflecting the enduring nature of the desire for love across the ages.
